AO Arena concert weekend: where to stay, eat and get out
How to do a gig at the AO Arena without the queue, the tram scrum, or the £45 hotel breakfast.
The AO Arena is a 21,000-capacity venue and it fills for every major tour that comes through the north. Here is what our guests need to know when they are heading in.
Getting there
The AO Arena entrance is at Manchester Victoria station. Manchester Piccadilly is a 12-minute walk. From Chinatown, the Arndale, or the Northern Quarter, walk. It is faster than the tram.
If you are staying in Hulme (Rolls Crescent) or Old Trafford (St Johns Manor), the tram to Victoria is 20 minutes plus walk time. Allow 45 door to door.
When to arrive
Doors typically open 90 minutes before the headline act. For a 7pm doors, aim to be inside by 7:30. Two things go quickly: bar queues and merch.
Do not arrive at the exact door time unless you enjoy queuing outside in Manchester weather.
Where to eat before
The AO Arena food is limited. Eat before you go in.
Corn Exchange across from Victoria has ten restaurant options. Zizzi, Cabana, Wagamama, plus a few better independents. Book a 5:45pm or 6pm slot on gig night.
The Northern Quarter is 12 minutes’ walk. Rudy’s Pizza, Bundobust, and Erst all take walk-ins for early evenings if you arrive by 5:30pm.
Manchester Cathedral area has fewer options. Skip unless you want a chain.
Where to drink after
The Arena empties into Victoria, then people go one of three ways: back to the hotel, to Corn Exchange bars (chain-heavy), or to the Northern Quarter (proper).
The best move: walk 12 minutes to Ancoats. Cutting Room Square has three or four proper bars open until midnight. Cleaner exit, fewer queues, better drinks.
Getting out
Do not sprint for the tram. Everyone else is doing the same.
If you are staying in the city centre, walking is faster than any transit for the first 30 minutes after the show.
If you are staying further out and need the tram, walk to Shudehill (five minutes) rather than joining the Victoria queue.
Ubers on gig nights are surge-priced by default. Expect 2x to 3x. Wait 30 minutes and it drops.
Merch strategy
Buy at doors, not after the show. The queue after the encore is 45 minutes deep.
What to skip
- The novelty street food van outside the Arena entrance.
- The Corn Exchange for a proper meal (fine for a chain fix, not for a night out).
- Any drink priced above £9 unless it is a proper cocktail bar.
Where to stay
Chinatown apartments for arena weekends are our recommendation. Twelve-minute walk to Victoria, no tram needed, kettle on within an hour of the show ending.
Rolls Crescent in Hulme gives you a whole house for a group but you will need to plan the transport back after.
The honest bit
The AO Arena is a functional venue. The sound is good, the sightlines are fine, the beer is expensive. Do your food, drink, and Uber logistics ahead of time and it becomes a great night. Wing it on a headline tour night and you will spend half the evening queueing.
