Match day at Old Trafford: an away fan's honest guide

If you have not been before, Old Trafford is a stadium built for people who know their way around. The signage helps, the local knowledge helps more. Here is what we tell our own guests when they stay with us for a match.

Where to eat before kick-off

Sam Platt’s on Salford Quays is the classic. Big place, decent food, easy walk in from the tram. It fills up fast for a 3pm kick-off, so aim to arrive 90 minutes before.

The Bishop Blaize and The Trafford both sit right by the ground. Both are home-only in atmosphere. If you are wearing away colours, avoid them.

The Salford Sports Bar behind Sam Platt’s is a safer option in away colours. Food is fine, TVs everywhere, and nobody minds a badge on your chest.

If you want something quieter, walk twenty minutes into Stretford. The Longford Tap does a proper pint and honest food, and you will get a seat.

Getting there

Tram is the cleanest option. Old Trafford stop is a five-minute walk to the ground. It gets busy on the way in but you will move through. The trick is at full time: do not sprint for the tram. Walk five minutes back toward Chester Road, cross over, and get on at Trafford Bar instead. You save 30 minutes of queueing.

Driving in is possible but expensive. Match-day parking near the ground is £20 to £30 on the driveway pop-ups. Cheaper: park at the Trafford Centre and tram in.

From the city centre, allow 25 minutes on the tram plus walk time. Do not risk a taxi for a big match; the road closures around Sir Matt Busby Way start early.

Which stand you are in matters

If you are in East Stand or East Lower, the exit routes push you toward the tram. West Stand and North Stand push toward the car parks. Sounds obvious, but plan your after-match logistics before kick-off.

Away fans

Away section is corner of North East Stand, level 2. Entry is off Sir Matt Busby Way. Get there 45 minutes early, the pat-down queue is slow.

Bag policy: nothing larger than an A4. No cans, no glass, no umbrellas.

Staying in Old Trafford

If you are staying with us at St Johns Manor, you are 30 minutes walk to the ground. Free off-street parking is included, which is worth around £25 per match if you are driving in. Two king bedrooms and two doubles sleep ten, so it works for a proper group weekend.

If you are staying in the city centre, budget 25 minutes tram in, 45 minutes tram out on a big fixture. Chinatown apartments give you the city on the doorstep for after the match.

The honest bit

Old Trafford is not the best-run stadium in the Premier League. The concourses get rammed at half time, the food is mid, and the tram queue at full time will test your patience. What it does have is atmosphere. Get there early, stay for the full time bit, and take the ten-minute walk to Trafford Bar rather than fighting for a tram at Old Trafford stop.
