Manchester Airport to the city centre: all your options, ranked
Train, tram, taxi, Uber, or hire car. Which one to pick, honestly, based on when you land and where you are staying.
You land at Manchester Airport. You need to be in central Manchester in the next hour. Here is what to do.
Train (the winner)
Manchester Piccadilly is 18 minutes by train. Trains run every ten minutes during the day, less at night. Tickets are £5.50 to £7 depending on time.
The station is inside the airport, signed as “Rail Station” at Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Ten-minute walk from the plane on average.
Pick this if: you are staying anywhere in central Manchester or the Northern Quarter. Piccadilly is a straight walk to most of the city centre stays.
Skip this if: you have three big suitcases and a stroller. The step onto the train can be tight, and the walk from the platforms is a fair distance.
Tram (the tourist trap)
The Metrolink stops at the airport but goes to St Werburgh’s, not central Manchester. You would need to change lines at Cornbrook. Takes 55 minutes. Unless you love a tram, do not.
Taxi (the reliable if pricey)
Black cab from the taxi rank is £30 to £40 depending on time of day and traffic. Signed at every terminal.
Pick this if: you have heavy luggage, you are travelling with kids, or it is after midnight when the trains get sparse.
Skip this if: it is rush hour. The M56 into Manchester can double your journey time between 5pm and 7pm.
Uber (usually cheaper than a black cab)
Uber XL (up to six) is £35 to £50 to central. Regular Uber is £25 to £35 for two people plus luggage.
The pickup zone at Manchester Airport is in the multi-storey car park adjacent to each terminal. Signposted. Allow ten minutes from door to pickup.
Pick this if: budget matters and it is not rush hour.
Bolt
Bolt is available at Manchester Airport and often cheaper than Uber for the same route. Same pickup zones.
Hire car
If you are staying somewhere with parking (Rolls Crescent, St Johns Manor, The Chatsworth), a hire car makes sense for a longer stay or if you plan to explore the region.
If you are staying centrally, do not hire a car. Central Manchester parking is £20 to £30 per day and the tram network gets you everywhere.
The airport hotel option
If you land at 11pm and depart the following day, hotels inside the airport (Radisson Blu, Clayton, Novotel) save you the transfer. Not our usual advice but worth knowing.
Quick decisions
- Solo, medium luggage, daytime: Train.
- Solo, medium luggage, after 11pm: Uber.
- Group of 4+, any time: Uber XL or a taxi.
- Landing during rush hour (5-7pm weekdays): Train, always.
Where to stay
Manchester Piccadilly is the central rail terminus, and our Chinatown apartments (Charlotte House 201, 202, 302, 303, 401, 402) are a five-minute walk from Piccadilly. Land, train, walk, kettle on within 45 minutes of touchdown.
