Match day at the Etihad: an away fan's honest guide

The Etihad is a modern, well-run stadium, but it sits in a regeneration zone east of the city centre with not much around it. That changes how you plan the day compared to a city-centre ground. Here is what we tell our own guests when they stay with us for a City match.

Where to drink before kick-off

The honest truth: there is very little right by the ground. The Etihad Campus is surrounded by car parks, training pitches, and the Co-op Arena, not pubs. Plan to drink in the city centre first, then tram over.

The Ancoats and New Islington area is your best bet on the way in. Cask, Seven Bro7hers Beerhouse, and the bars around Cutting Room Square are relaxed and mixed, so away colours are not an issue. It is a ten-minute walk from there to Etihad Campus if you want to skip the tram.

Mary D’s Beamish Bar on Grey Mare Lane is the closest traditional pub to the ground, but it is home-heavy on a match day. If you are in away colours, give it a miss.

Inside the ground the away concourse has a bar, and the Etihad is fully cashless, so have a card ready.

Getting there

Tram is the cleanest option by far. The Etihad Campus stop is on the Ashton-under-Lyne line and sits right at the stadium. Trams run from the city centre roughly every six minutes and take 10 to 15 minutes. A return from town is around £3.50.

The trick at full time is the same as anywhere: do not sprint for the first tram. The Etihad Campus queue backs up fast. Walk one stop back toward Holt Town, or walk the fifteen minutes into Ancoats and get on there. You will be home before the Etihad Campus queue has cleared.

Driving in is possible. The stadium has a ring of colour-coded match-day car parks (Blue, Grey, and others) that you pre-book through the club. Expect £15 to £25. Cheaper: park nearer the city centre and tram the last leg.

From the city centre, allow 15 minutes on the tram plus walk time. Do not risk a taxi for a big fixture; the roads around Ashton New Road and Alan Turing Way close early.

Which stand you are in

Away fans are in the South Stand, typically the corner, entered from the away compound on the Grey car park side. Allocation is usually around 3,000 and can run up all three tiers for a big cup tie.

Turnstiles open two hours before kick-off. Get to the away compound at least 60 minutes early, the search queue is slow and there is a bag drop to clear first.

Bag policy

Nothing larger than A4 (roughly 12 x 8 x 3 inches). No backpacks or rucksacks of any size, no cans, no glass. There is a bag drop in the Grey car park inside the away compound if you turn up with something too big, but it eats time you do not have.

Staying near the ground

If you are staying with us at St Johns Manor, you are a straight tram or a 30-minute walk from the Etihad via Ancoats. Free off-street parking is included, which is worth around £25 per match if you are driving in, and two king bedrooms and two doubles sleep ten for a proper group weekend.

The honest bit

The Etihad itself is one of the better-run stadiums in the league. Clean concourses, quick service, a cashless system that actually moves people through. The catch is the location: there is nothing to do right outside it, so the day only works if you sort your pre-match drinks in the city centre and treat the tram as part of the plan. Get to Ancoats early, tram over with 60 minutes to spare, and walk back a stop at full time rather than fighting the crowd.
