Where to stay in Manchester: a neighbourhood guide
Chinatown, Northern Quarter, Deansgate, Ancoats, Salford Quays. What each area is actually like, and who it suits.
Manchester is small enough to walk across and varied enough that the area you pick genuinely changes your trip. Here is the honest version of where to stay, area by area, and who each one suits. No fluff, just where we would put you.
City centre and Chinatown
The safe, central pick. You are minutes from Piccadilly for trains, a short walk from the main shopping and theatres, and surrounded by restaurants. Chinatown itself is right in the middle of it, which means some of the best late food in the city is on your doorstep.
This is where our Charlotte House apartments sit, five minutes from Piccadilly, in the middle of everything. If it is your first time in Manchester, or you are here to work and want to minimise the walking, stay central.
Best for: first-timers, business trips, anyone who wants everything within a ten-minute walk.
Northern Quarter
The characterful one. Independent coffee shops, record stores, street art, small-plate restaurants, and the best bars in the city. It is lively, a little scruffy in the way people mean as a compliment, and endlessly walkable.
If you want Manchester’s personality rather than its shopping centre, this is the area. It is loud at weekends, so light sleepers should factor that in.
Best for: repeat visitors, food and drink people, anyone under about 40 who wants a good night out.
Deansgate and Castlefield
The polished end. Tall towers, waterside bars, the canals of Castlefield, and a slightly calmer, more grown-up feel than the Northern Quarter. Good restaurants, good river walks, and easy to reach the rest of the centre.
Best for: couples, a smarter weekend, anyone who wants central but quieter.
Ancoats
The one everyone writes about, and for good reason. A former industrial district turned into the city’s best eating and drinking neighbourhood, all within a few streets. It is close to the Northern Quarter but a touch more relaxed.
Best for: food-led trips, second or third visits, people who like to stay somewhere with a scene.
Salford Quays and MediaCity
Out of the centre, on the water. The BBC and ITV are here, so it suits anyone with MediaCity meetings, and it is calmer and more open than the city centre. A 15-minute tram ride gets you into town. There is a full Salford Quays and MediaCity overview if you are considering it.
Best for: media and business travellers, families who want more space, anyone who prefers water and quiet to bustle.
A whole house, anywhere
If you are a group or a family, a whole-house rental often beats several hotel rooms on both price and sanity. Our Rolls Crescent and St Johns Manor houses give you a shared kitchen and living space, which changes the whole feel of a group trip.
Best for: families, groups of friends, anyone travelling with more than four people.
The short version
Central or Chinatown for your first trip and for business. Northern Quarter or Ancoats for food, drink, and personality. Deansgate for a smarter, quieter weekend. Salford Quays for MediaCity and for space. A whole house if there are more than four of you.
